Recently, I found myself reflecting on seasons—not just the weather kind but the ones we experience in life and work. A friend and I were chatting about how winter seems to linger a bit longer in the Midwest. December and January bring a magical snow-covered landscape and fun activities like skiing and snow tubing, plus hot cocoa. But by February, many of us are over it, and March brings a glimmer of hope that change is near.
Work, much like the seasons, has its cycles—some more drawn out than others. It got me thinking: What makes those long, arduous stretches bearable?
I came across a study (I wish I could remember where!) that explored whether our brains prefer pattern or surprise. Turns out, we’re wired for both! Patterns bring comfort and predictability, but too much of the same (dreary cold snowy winter or stressful stretches at work that never seem to end) dulls our interest. Inject a little surprise—a break in the routine—and our brains light up with excitement.
LEADERSHIP
This has profound implications for team engagement. Predictability, like a well-structured meeting agenda, gives us stability—think of it as the framework of a football game or a church service. But within that framework, small surprises can ignite energy and keep things fresh, make things bearable, dare I say even enjoyable. A few that I use in my leadership repertoire are to:
Share an intriguing article or story.
Start the meeting in a new way, even with a simple joke or a fun fact.
Rearrange the meeting room or add something unique to the wall – even a green post it note will get people curious (or change your virtual background).
LIFE
The same idea applies to personal life. When schedules feel overwhelming, a little intentional surprise—a quick spontaneous outing, a moment of rest, or an adventurous twist—can breathe fresh life into your rhythm.
So, what season are you in right now? Are you leaning on pattern, or is it time for a surprise? Whatever it is, finding the balance might just be the refresh you—and your team—need.
Here’s to navigating your seasons with both!
